Phoenix, Arizona – The lawyer who has been fighting for years for the children of migrant workers in Phoenix has decided to become the “child advocate” for family law lawyers.
Diane DeAngelis, who represents immigrant parents in child advocacy cases, said her position will be “more effective” than ever if she has a child advocate at her side.
DeAngelis has been representing parents of children in a number of cases in Arizona, including one that has gone to trial, but she has been in a minority in her legal work for years.
The decision to become a child advocacy lawyer comes after she lost a lawsuit against a local business owner that she said was defrauding immigrants in Phoenix.
The case was brought by the Arizona Coalition for Children and Families.
The lawsuit was settled out of court in 2011.
But the case was later brought back to the court, where DeAngelas won a second trial in 2014 and was awarded $100,000 in attorney’s fees.
Deangelis said she wants to help immigrant parents “fight the battles that they are facing,” including those facing deportation.
“It’s not about getting money,” she said.
“I’m not an attorney.
I don’t have a law degree.
I’m just a mother and a lawyer.”
DeAngeles’ efforts have also resulted in her getting some of the most prestigious awards she has ever received.
She received a law review from University of Virginia, a Rhodes scholarship from the University of California, and a $5,000 grant from the National Association of Social Workers.
De Angelis said her career is on track to be one of the top 10 in Arizona.
The last time she won a scholarship was in 2000, when she was a junior law student at Arizona State University.
She said her biggest challenge is to keep her focus on immigration cases, which she said are difficult to win because they have a low bar for proof.
“When you talk about immigrants, you have to be very careful that you’re not looking at someone’s status in their legal status,” she told the Times of Israel.
“You’re looking at their life.”
“I’ve been doing this for 10 years,” DeAngeles said.
DeLauris has spent her career in the United States, primarily representing parents, but said her focus in Arizona has shifted over the past few years to her work in the children’s community.
“This is the first time I’m really really involved in children,” she added.
She hopes her new role will give her a chance to be a “child advocacy lawyer in Arizona.”
